Self Diagnosed TV-aholic

It’s after 1 a.m. and I am wide awake. That’s what I get for drinking coffee after 4 pm. Hey, we all make bad decisions. I have two boys under the age of 5. I live off coffee. For my birthday, my husband upgraded my coffee maker. Supposedly I’m “hard to shop for.” Anyway, we are getting way off topic. It’s one of my many quirks.

I’m a self diagnosed tv addict. Needless to say a lot of factors have led to this.

I grew up watching sitcoms with my mom. I watched soaps and daytime talk shows with my grandma. I guess you can call it bonding time. Screen time wasn’t exactly a thing back then. Thinking back my addiction manifested early on. I taped my soaps when I was at school. In the summer, I wouldn’t play outside with the kids. I’d channel surf. As a teen, I like many others, was glued to The WB (google it). Dawson’s Creek, One Tree Hill, Felicity. I had a tv/vcr combo in my bedroom. Needless to say there was a lot of recording and re-recording until some great human invented the DVR. In college, I studied broadcasting. I made friends with others who liked tv as much as I did. During my senior year, I wrote a rather lengthy paper (with my bffs help) about The O.C. When I graduated I got a job in television news. With my paycheck, I got AT&T Uverse so I could record multiple shows. At one point, I worked for COX and basically got free cable. We’re talking all the channels. I had two DVRs. At no point did I ever see a problem. It wasn’t until I had kids, that it became very apparent.

When my son was born in 2015, I took 12 weeks of leave. We had a lot of home time. It was then that my MIL introduced me to HGTV. It was then we got Netflix and I fell I love with West Wing. It was then Gilmore Girls did a reboot. Over the next three years I binged like any normal human being between network, cable, Netflix and Amazon Prime. I kept up for show content and water cooler talk. Then kid two happened. He was born in the early stages of summer. It was too hot to go outside. So we’d watch tv. My husband started a new job, I got the middle of the night feedings. So, we’d watch tv. I didn’t go back to work (that’s another story) so I had many hours at home with a tiny baby. I live in Minnesota. It quickly became too cold to go outside. We’d watch tv. I devoured shows. Some shows quite frankly I didn’t care about. Some I am so glad I discovered. Call the Midwife. Outlander (thanks Beth). Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Workin Moms. Nailed It. Schitt’s Creek. With me out of work, we decided to cut cable. Before we did, I created an Xcel spreadsheet of all the shows I watched, so I could go back and find them within the many streaming apps we have. I know, nuts! Like I said, we all have our quirks.

*I should mention I don’t watch a lot of popular reality tv shows. I’ve never been a member of the Bachelor Nation and Bravo is just too much drama.
